Local lawyers join forces to support women experiencing violence
Local family law firm, Parker Coles Curtis, has joined forces with the Women’s Legal Centre ACT to raise funds to support free legal services for women at risk of domestic and family violence.
9 March 2022 is the Hands Up for Canberra Giving Day. This day raises funds for local Canberra charities and organisations that assist those in our community that need it most.
Parker Coles Curtis is proud to be matching all donations made to the Centre through the Canberra Giving Day Appeal, up to $10,000. The funds raised will be used to support the Centre’s Legal Disbursements Fund. This fund is used to cover the costs associated with a legal matter, including fees to prepare reports, court filing and hearing fees and fees for the service of court documents such as subpoenas.
Parker Coles Curtis is a family law firm lead by three dynamic women who value empowering people experiencing a relationship change or family conflict. Their formidable team love to give back to the community and are driven to help those in the system who fall between the cracks of the legal system when they are unable to afford legal services.
The Women’s Legal Centre is a team of lawyers dedicated to improving women’s lives through specialist legal representation, support and advocacy. They provide free legal assistance to women affected by relationship and family breakdown, women experiencing problems at work and migration assistance for women on temporary visas. The majority of their clients are affected by domestic and family violence.
Parker Coles Curtis Director Debra Parker, said, “The Women’s Legal Centre is a feminist service with a strong value base directly aligning with our firm values. They do incredible work providing free legal services to women affected by domestic and family violence and are strong local advocates for gender equality and women’s rights to safety and financial security.”
Ms Parker continued, “The prevalence of family violence towards women is extremely high and takes all forms including their partner restricting them to access legal or support services. Our organisations advocate for quality, inclusion and acting for women in need of safety and support for themselves and their children. As three mothers, this is very close to our hearts and the Directors of our firm are proud to support such an admirable organisation.”
Women’s Legal Centre CEO, Elena Rosenman said, “The Centre benefits from extensive pro bono support from the Canberra legal profession. We know the lawyers at Parker Coles Curtis believe all women in Canberra should benefit from legal assistance, not just those who can afford it. Through this partnership, they are amplifying the value of every donation we receive and are supporting us to increase the number of women we can assist.”
